The Frontier Gas brand emerged in the early 20th century, rooted in the rugged spirit of the American West. Known for its cowboy iconography and frontier branding, Frontier Gas stood out from the corporate oil giants of the time by offering locally-sourced fuel with a side of Wild West flair. Their signs, most famously the keyhole design featuring a rearing bronco and rider, became staples at rural filling stations across the West and Southwest during the rise of automobile tourism and Route 66. This exact style – a porcelain enamel, double-sided sign – was typically mounted on steel post poles and lit with bold neon, serving as both a fuel beacon and a visual symbol of the frontier spirit.
