This sign advertises Pennzip, a sub-brand of Pennzoil, developed during the golden age of American automotive expansion. Pennzoil traces its roots back to the early 20th century and was once a part of the South Penn Oil Company, founded in 1889. The Pennzip name was used during the 1930s–1950s as a marketing label for high-octane, performance gasoline products.
The 1940s, in particular, saw neon signs explode in popularity across America’s gas stations and highways—symbols of mobility, progress, and design innovation. Pennzip signs were once a staple at full-service stations, where they invited drivers to fill up with high-quality fuel as they traveled the open road. Today, surviving examples of these signs in such pristine condition are extremely rare and increasingly valuable.
