Vernors Ginger Ale Neon Sign: Vintage Embossed Tin Litho

This original vintage Vernors Ginger Ale neon sign is just one of hundreds of soda shop collectibles currently for sale . This large, single sided, embossed tin litho sign measures 38 inches wide by 18 inches tall, and it on a 4 1/2 inch deep metal can. It reads “VERNOR’S GINGER ALE” in large, green, script style lettering, against an all yellow background. The sign lights up in green neon around the word “VERNORS”, in white neon around the words “Ginger Ale”, and in yellow neon around the border of the sign. It is an authentic advertisement that was originally displayed at soda shops and drug stores in the 1950’s, and was made in the U.S.A. by DONASCO. It is dated as having been manufactured in July of 1950. Like all of our collectible signs, this rare, Vernors Ginger Ale neon sign is sold in original, unrestored condition, as pictured. We do not believe in restoring old signs because it is our belief that every ding, dent, and blemish is part of the story and history of the item. This sign, is in Excellent/Very Good (Exl/VG) condition overall with the only significant damage being a medium sized ding in the lower right corner of the sign. There are a few other small dings, mostly on the right side of the sign, and some wear in most of the corner areas, but otherwise it is an extremely clean example of this now, over 70-year-old sign.

The Creation of Vernors: James Vernor was working as a pharmacist when he enlisted in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He had developed a special blend of ginger and other ingredients, which he stored in an oak cask. However, his service in the war delayed his return to his concoction.

Aging Process: The story goes that Vernor stored his ginger concoction in the oak cask for four years. During this time, the flavors matured and developed a unique taste, combining ginger with various spices and flavors. The aging process is often compared to the process of aging whiskey or wine.

About The Donaldson Art Sign Company And History

The Donaldson Art Sign Company located in Cincinnati, Ohio can be traced back to a partnership between William M. Donaldson and Henry Elms. These two entrepreneurs began a small lithography business in Cincinnati on August 10, 1863. By the end of the first year of operation, the firm owned and operated seven hand printing presses. With the death of Mr. Elms in 1872, the business became the sole property of Donaldson. The company was officially incorporated as the Donaldson Lithograph Co. in 1883.

The company moved to the City of Newport, Kentucky in 1898, and was housed in the old Duber Watch Case Company facility (6th and Washington Streets). The company flourished in its Newport location. By 1913, plans were underway to expand the firm. William M. Donaldson acquired the old Central Covington Stockyards at 21st and Banklick Streets. Plans called for a 50,000 square foot building that would eventually employ 200 workers. The cost of construction reached the sum of nearly $100,000. Work on the new plant was begun in August 1914.
